I don't think that weddings are stupid. Some people are stupid and get married for the wrong reasons OR spend a lot more than they can afford to impress the people they invited. This is not the purpose of a weddinig.

Do "holy books" have a negative effect on morality; do they do more harm than good for society?

This is atheist says, indeed they do have a negative effect and they do cause far more harm then good for society. Especially considering the most common "holy books" are books like the Bible or the Koran. These books have some horribly brutal, barbaric and primitive allegedly god-given moral instructions. Sure, there are a few good moral instructions, but like Thomas Jefferson said, these are like diamonds in a dunghill. The likelihood that deranged religious people will take the wrong "holy book" endorsed morals seriously is too high and there is no proviso about not taking them literally. This is why there is so much religion inspired violence and social disharmony in the world today; simply because religious people take their "holy books" too seriously, right? They lack the reasoning to determine right from wrong and this means the religious moral instruction they received as children was simply a bad moral instruction, doesn't it?

Is my son deranged or is this normal?

I have a 7 year old son who plays imaginary violent games. I am talking very violent, like stabbing people, tying ropes around them, shooting their brains out. He plays this with both his male and female friends. He is generally a really nice kid, no behavior problems or anything like that at school or with us. His "games" however do disturb me and I don't consider myself a prude. I've done some research and read that hampering/forbidding this as youngsters can actually cause confusion, feelings the child is bad, and it to manifest and come out as adults. As for violence, we have not exposed him to crazy adult shows like Saw or anything. He has watched some shows that many boys his age have watched (ie. Star Wars, Transformers). He has other opportunities to express himself physically, ie. plays sports, outside a lot, etc. I am trying to tell him it is okay to play hunting games, superhero games, but no violent being the bad guy games. I don't know what to do. What are other parents doing? What is your opinion?

Is it legal to kill cats without colars that come onto my property?

this is not for sport, they scare off all the rabbits that i eat and this pisses me off. I have 3.4 acres and some of these may be feral cats, i will tell the owners to get it if it has a collar and will NOT shoot it, i have a large fence and try to take precautions but this is getting out of hand. animal control refuses to run around my woods all day and trap them, they didn't know the legal ramifications of shooting them though. again, i will not shoot those with collars and warn all of my neibhors (who know were they cats go...my plot is the only around here). again this isn't for sport, i am not some deranged cat killer they are trespassing, scaring off my small game and may have diseases, is their anything i can do before i start to take action in this matter?

I simply wanted to post this after seeing so much on YA and in reality. Being a completely faithful Christian man myself, I've had many "conversations" regarding my beliefs and other beliefs with Atheists who are friends of mine in which neither of us have attempted to demean another's belief or force our beliefs on another and spoken very civilly and intellignlently. My question is, what really provokes you all to be so passionately unruly and wrongful in your approaches to people like that, if you care to answer?

Need help getting rid of my boyfriends psycho deranged brother?

I stay at my boyfriends parents most of the time, also living here is his grandmother and his brother. His brother is severely bi-polar and schizophrenic and has attacked people in the house hold numerous times, so far he has physically attacked his mother, father, and my boyfriend/his brother. he attacked my boyfriend the other day and was arrested and kicked out for like the 20th time and his parents continue to let him live here because no one else will take him in and he refuses to get a job and his own place, also he has a son that i am extremely worried about being raised by such a nut. But anyway, his parents continue to let him stay here even though they know that every time the fighting gets worse and more dangerous, to the point that i fear for peoples lives. Since im not family i pretty much have to keep my mouth shut and deal with it but no matter what my boyfriend says to his parents about how extremely messed up it is that they let him stay here, especially knowing that it WILL happen again and be much worse the next time. but they ignore how serious the situation is only cause they don't want him on the streets. Not only is he dangerous but he is the most unpleasant person to live with, he constantly blasts metal throughout the house, he slams everything and stomps around, talks way too loud, takes whatever he wants because he thinks everything belongs to him including my boyfriends car, and leaves disgusting messes everywhere without cleaning up after himself. but if you confront him about any of it he with start a ridiculous inappropriate fight and eventually turn it physical, and almost every time goes for a weapon, for example the last fight between him and my boyfriend was only two days ago and he threw a chair at him without warning. He also is now starting not to only threaten to hurt his mother father and brother but has added me to his list too starting arguments with me just because he used to date my sister and he knows i hate him for the sick horrible things he did to her and destroyed her life. He has no remorse for the evil things he has done, and it is very obvious that to him he is just proving to everyone that he is the one in control, especially since his parents let this **** keep up. this dangerous nightmare needs to go before someone gets seriously injured or killed. we have been doing everything we can to try and get jobs and get out but its proving difficult and taking too much time, we need a quick solution to get rid of this monster. i have no idea what to do, i feel so helpless and so does my boyfriend.

Skin peeling on fingers ?

So the skin on the other sides of the palms of my fingers are peeling. Not like when you are in the water too long and it starts peeling but.. the skin looks like brown dead skin. I went to the beach 2 days ago and my hands look tanned (I know weirdd) My hands have never peeled on that side of my hand before and I go to the beach.. well I live in Hawaii so I can get sunburnt/ tanned easily. Under the "dead" skin is pinkish- skin color new skin as you would say. Is this normal to peel on my HANDS ?

Travel questions and advice please?

My husband and I have no debt, no children, and we still rent meaning we have no home loan. We are in our mid twenties and want to travel. Vegas and Hawaii are easy being we live in America. I want to travel further however and broaden mine and my husbands education of the world before settling down with the whole family scene. Germany, Ireland, Venice, these are just a few of the many places in Europe I wish to go to. Any advice on travel, do's and don'ts would be of great appreciation. Need help regarding understanding gravity in space vs on Earth!?

My teacher wants to know how a person standing on Earth could easily lift a wrench having a mass of 1 kilogram, but not a scientific instrument with a mass of 100 kilograms. But in the International Space Station, she is quite capable of manipulating both as the will ‘float’, but the scientific instrument still requires more effort to move than the wrench. He wants me to be able to explain this concept and I'm really not sure. I would think that the scientific instrument would be weightless in space, but if it still takes effort to lift it... that can't be correct. Is it something to do with the person having to push against it and then the instrument having to push back according to Newton's Laws??

The story itself is good but i find the writing to be a bit choppy and overly formal. Written to the age group you are trying to relate to in the story it would come off as over written.

Romance Book...Long Lost?

A long time ago, I read a romance novel that stuck with me, but I have since lost it and cannot remember clearly the author or the title. I remember that it started in Russia, where the heroine was seduced and then chased out of Russia or exiled because her lover was also the empress's lover at the time...From there she lands in a concubine unit, but escapes after her master is killed and ends up the servant of one of the girls from the harem until she escapes onboard a ship bound for somewhere in the Pacific. I have been with my husband for 17 years now. We are both in our 40's and have a 6 year old child together. I will not bore you with details but I have found a back-bone that I have been missing all my life. I cut my family out of my life (my mother is deranged and tried to kidnap my child while in a grocery store in broad daylight...thankfully someone stopped her and she didn't get too far). My brother is a convicted felon for stealing firearms from a residence and money from his employer. My sister is not stable and is known to have a drug issue. The only family that I have is my in-laws which in the case of divorce they will take sides with my husband of course. And friends? All the friends I am allowed or was ever allowed to have was either wives or girlfriends of his buddies. And one of his friends that I trusted knows this is going on between us and said that unfortunately he would have to side with my husband. So there went any hope of that person to lean on! I want to divorce my husband because I cannot get passed his previous indisgressions or his passive aggressive behavior anymore. I can't deal with it!! Years of pleading to go to a counselor or therapy or even church was all "okay lets do it" but when I made the arrangements it was always "yeah i don't think that's such a good idea cuz therapy leads to more divorce and fights than you go in with". So here I have been stuck for years. I am the sole caretaker of our child. He says he helps but he doesn't. (Remember passive aggressive behavior lets them believe that they are never at fault and if something is said about their lack of behavior it has to be something else besides them.) So I decide that I am not doing this anymore because it's preventing me from being the happy good person that I am and want to be. It's effecting my parenting and just everything in my life. I know that I can do this on my own. I am not scared of being alone or having to sacrifice. I've done that all my life. My child is now feeling the full effect at the age of 6 of daddy and how he really is. I am accused of putting these things into my child's head but I have not and our kid figured it out. Anyways... I have decided that I want to go forward regardless of what my husband wants. I have gotten a better job with significant pay and health/dental benefits I can afford through work for me and my child. I have been trying to save...the type of business that I am in I have to have a payroll account which my paycheck is direct deposited into and because it is a payroll account my husband cannot touch it. Before, I would have to take my entire paycheck and deposit into his account that did not have my name on it and I would have to ask him for money and tell him exactly what it was for. Then show receipts. Not anymore! But lately he's been telling me that he needs money...I give him a specific amount that should cover my parts of household bills. The extra he is asking for has been in amounts of $400-$500 or more and it drained any amounts of savings that I was going to use to leave and get my own place with. I feel that he's controlling me again by taking my money so I can't leave. I've tried government agentcies but I have to be divorced or separated to get any help and I can't get out to get those services! I am stuck in pergatory!!! There is no saving this marriage and I don't even want to try. Those days have come and gone. And I feel that if my kid can figure out what's going on then it's got to be bad. I have no idea what to do here...he knows I want a divorce and I want to leave. He tells me that he doesn't want a divorce...he doesn't want to lose me or our child. I told him that I would never keep him from seeing our child and his response is "well eventually it will come down to me never seeing him/her again because you will start seeing someone else and start over and do you really think that I want to be around that? Forget it!" my response to that is "then that is your decision and it's a pretty [crappy] one at that!" He's all about appearances and how things look to people. He's very materialistic. He never once said anything about "we'll work it out" or take some time apart to regroup. It's always "What will my friends think? You know how this will hurt my family if you leave? What's this going to look like to everyone? If you leave I will have to sell the house (our house is paid off and there is no mortgage thanks to me) because I can't afford it alone." and his own mother (who I am not close with at all) was visiting from out of state and she picked up on our unhappiness right away and told me that it's not worth my own happiness to stay just because of his silliness. My husband and I are starting to think about next year's vacation. We would like to go sometime in May. This refers to 15 people that you meet right off the bat when you live in the dormitories. They can be a mix of roommates and other people who live on your floor. These people have the greatest potential to become your friends. I know where I used to live there was a group of 10 or 11 people who all became fast friends while living on campus. And during another year, I saw another group of maybe 8 or 9 people quickly become friends with each other. Plus, the freshmen dorms ae usually the friendliest dorms there are, because there are a lot of people who leave their doors open so people can come in and say hi and hang out. Once you get into the 2nd year and upper classmen dorms, there aren't as many people who do that. Their friend-group is already established.
